“Are leaders born or made?” It’s a question we get asked nearly every time we give a speech or conduct a workshop. Our answer? We’ve never met a leader who wasn’t born! We've also never met an accountant, artist, athlete, engineer, lawyer, physician, writer, or zoologist who wasn't born. We’re all born. That’s a given. It’s what you do with what you have before you die that makes the difference.

Meet “The Truth About Leadership” authors Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner at The Leadership Challenge Forum in San Diego in August. Visit their website at:

"If only I'd had more time to practice," goes the common post-presentation lament. But, as Dave Zielinski reports, the difference between a mediocre presentation and a memorable one is more a function of how you practice, not how much.

If you're like many presenters, the end of a presentation signals the start of your brilliant hindsight. If only I hadn't stumbled over that key phrase. If only I had handled that question a bit more deftly or found more compelling data to support my message. And of course, one of the most common post-presentation laments, if only I'd had more time to practice.

The truth is, no amount of preparation time is enough. Allot one month to develop and practice for a big presentation and in the post-mortem, you wish it would have been two.

A South Carolina fabric and chemical manufacturer uses a machine that runs five times faster than anticipated and completes tasks that were totally unexpected when the company authorized the purchase order. That's because employees have made more than 200 small improvements to that machine, contributing to the organization's competitive advantage in a challenging industry.
