Corporate  leaders around the world believe that resilience-the ability to overcome challenges and turn them into opportunities-is key to keeping your job. These leaders view women as slightly more resilient than men, and they are providing their female professionals with a variety of programs aimed at developing resilience, according to Accenture's "Women Leaders and Resilience: Perspectives from the C-Suite" study of 524 senior executives in 20 countries in Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America. The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL)'s Emerging Leaders Research Survey tackled this topic, obtaining 3,417 responses from a sample composed of 57 percent women and 43 percent men.

As the economy begins to recover, companies are redoubling their efforts to engage their customers-to keep the ones they have and bring in new ones. To achieve these goals, however, employees first must be engaged-committed, enthusiastic, and motivated to provide the interactions and experiences that keep customers close. In fact, a 2009 Gallup study found that organizations that had employee engagement scores in the top quartile had 18 percent higher productivity and 16 percent higher profits.

When should you start thinking about the legacy you are leaving as a leader? In some ways, professional athletes have an advantage because they "retire" at a much younger age than most of us, and the media continually reminds them of their legacy. In a recent article about Shaquille O'Neal in Sports Illustrated, the writer notes that at this point everything Shaq says and does is focused on his legacy and what people will remember about him after his basketball career is over. But some athletes are fortunate to move on into other careers such as broadcasting launched by their popularity as an athlete. People often feel they are too young or too old to think about their legacy. But the time to think about it is now.
