Technology allows us to be more productive and, potentially at least, more profitable. The dark side of technology is the electronic wall that has grown brick by brick over the last 20 years. As more and more technical opportunities arise that allow workers to communicate without being “face to face,” people are learning less and less about how to communicate effectively.

Not yet, anyway.EVERYWHERE YOU TURN THESE DAYS PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT HIGH-DEFINITION VIDEO, OTHERWISE KNOWN SIMPLY AS HD. BUT SCARCELY ANYONE STOPS TALKING LONG ENOUGH TO LEARN PRECISELY WHAT HD IS (AND ISN'T), OR TO CONTEMPLATE WHETHER THERE ARE ANY PRACTICAL REASONS FOR INVESTING IN THE EQUIPMENT AND KNOW-HOW NECESSARY TO CREATE AND DISPLAY HD CONTENT, ESPECIALLY IN THE WORKPLACE.

"If only I'd had more time to practice," goes the common post-presentation lament. But, as Dave Zielinski reports, the difference between a mediocre presentation and a memorable one is more a function of how you practice, not how much.

If you're like many presenters, the end of a presentation signals the start of your brilliant hindsight. If only I hadn't stumbled over that key phrase. If only I had handled that question a bit more deftly or found more compelling data to support my message. And of course, one of the most common post-presentation laments, if only I'd had more time to practice.

The truth is, no amount of preparation time is enough. Allot one month to develop and practice for a big presentation and in the post-mortem, you wish it would have been two.
