The increasingly popular MShow system supports any media type that a browser will support, including high-end graphics, Flash, DHTML, streaming media, iPIX, Lotus Screen Cam, Macromedia Dreamweaver and prerecorded audio and video. MShow software uses standard HTTP to communicate with the server, so anyone can lead or participate in a presentation, even from behind a firewall. Samsung SVP-6000
The price-for-performance champion of document cameras, this unit connects easily to both televisions and monitors (unlike some other cameras) and the display is as crisp and clear as they come, especially for the price. The unit includes a scrolling function and its remote control has adjustments for setting the focus, volume and brightness.

WolfVision VZ-57
WolfVision's top-of-the-line document camera uses "progressive scan" technology to produce a data signal with more resolution than a standard PAL/NTSC video can provide. Images can be output in SVGA, XGA or SXGA mode as RGBHV signals and in 100-percent digital format on a DVI output. Progressive-scan CCDs can pick up 25 pictures per second, resulting in motion almost as good as that from a video camera.

With the latest release of InDesign 1.5, Adobe not only fixed some of the issues from its initial version, but added text-on-a-path, automatic trapping, print styles and vertical justification. Adobe Photoshop 6.0
With Version 6.0, Adobe worked to make the program more user- and Web-friendly and, for the most part, succeeded. Add into that better integration with ImageReady and more Web features, and it's the obvious king of the hill.

ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000
For those who need an easy-to-use editing program that's well within the budget, ArcSoft's PhotoStudio 2000 is the ticket. Laid out with simple, easy-to-find commands and impressive features, any novice can look like a pro. You can import photos from digital cameras, add layers, organize images, do one-click fixes for common imaging problems and use the many levels of undo for the occasional "oops." It's hard not to be impressed.

PowerPoint plug-in
ZUMA Digital ActiveDVD
The plug-in market has blossomed nicely this year, offering more graphics, animation and even chart options, but it's hard to discount the lure of DVD. With ActiveDVD, presenters can work full-screen, full-motion DVD content into their Microsoft PowerPoint slides. All you need is a computer and a DVD player. The plug-in does the rest.

Apple iMovie2
With the introduction of iMovie, those who had never fiddled with video more than recording it on their home camcorders began to truly believe that they, too, could edit video. iMovie2 provides effects, transitions, insert editing and video and audio clip locking. It's a Macintosh-only program, but it's still the easiest way to create professional-looking video with little effort.

Although Director 8 Shockwave Studio is enormous, the company has put a lot of stock into adding online-learning guides and making this version of the software easier to use. Take into account its new lingo behaviors, grouped tab palettes, better compression techniques and the easy-to-use Shockwave function, and the program is the top dog for creating multimedia-rich presentations.

ScanSoft Kai's Power Show

Microsoft FrontPage 2000
With this upgrade, Microsoft has put a lot of work into FrontPage 2000 and the result is a solid Web product without a lot of hassle. This program offers wizards, templates, automatic link verification and organization of imported images for novices. The software also offers some support of such high-end features as DHTML. With interest in Web slides and nonlinear presentations growing, FrontPage is a surprisingly good choice.

Monster paper handling is what sets Hewlett-Packard's HP LaserJet 8550MFP apart from the masses. While supporting 11 x 17-inch pages and as many as four paper trays (3,100 pages total), it prints six pages per minute (ppm) in color and 24 ppm in black. This, along with automatic duplexing, direct PDF printing and full-color copier mode, lets this printer pack a good punch.

With an 18 x 24-inch footprint, the PowerLook 2100XL is a 46-pound scanner to seriously consider if you regularly scan a large load of high-quality images. The model's High 3.4Dmax feature helps nab details normally shadowed-out when scanning 35mm slides. With UMAX's "mirror moving technology," the CCD stays put while mirrors project the scanned images, so scans with this machine are simply superb.

Pushing its Stylus line up yet another notch, Epson's Photo 2000P inkjet reproduces photos for the image-archiving enthusiast. The 2000P is friendly with both Macintosh and Windows-based computers and can be networked.

The Panasonic PV-DV600's still images may not have the best resolution in the world, but the camera's ease-of-use, flash feature and powerful zooming make it our top choice in the 2000 class of camcorders. A healthy handful of special effect options, such as mirror, strobe and slim round out this camera's impressive feature set.

Only for the most serious in-house video production users (who have equally serious financial backing), Smoke is the Cadillac package for nonlinear, uncompressed editing. You might even get a little more than what you see.

Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer 9600se
So many CD-RW drives are out there that picking a favorite wasn't easy, but Hewlett-Packard's CD-Writer 9600se nudged up to number one. Although it's only available for the Windows platform and is solely SCSI-based, its fast 12X write speed and 32X reading speed make it a delight to use. Also, it's packaged with a huge software bundle and has commendable support. An internal version sells for $349.

Nikon Coolpix 990
Not only does it look cool, but with its 3.34-megapixel CCD, the Coolpix 990 gives you nearly everything you can have in a digital camera today. The camera can record minimovie motion-JPEGs of 40 seconds, as well as ultrahigh-resolution still-image TIFFs. It's also got more extra features than you'll ever use.
